Unusual winter fungus discovered in Belovezhskaya Pushcha

15.12.2025 10:12
MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) - An interesting and unusual winter fungus, Tremella, was spotted in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha, the MIR24 TV Channel reported citing the press service of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park.

It is also known as yellow brain, golden jelly fungus, yellow trembler, witches’ butter

This fungus grows in mixed forests, and its golden color makes it noticeable even in a winter deciduous forest. Tremella is a late-autumn fungus that, due to climate changes, can also be found in winter. It is not afraid of nighttime frosts but cannot tolerate heat and direct sunlight.

Orange Tremella is classified as an edible mushroom. It is valued not for its bold flavor, but for its unique jelly-like consistency, which can resemble seaweed or scallops. In Belarus, this mushroom is practically never consumed as food, while in Asian countries, particularly China and Korea, it is considered a delicacy.
